May proclaimed Arthritis Awareness Month Over one in four adults in SC are ham- pered by arthritis, the leading cause of disability in the nation, SCDHEC reported. "Twenty-eight per- cent of adults in our state have arthritis and another 17% have chronic joint symptoms or possible arthritis," said Gwendolyn Prestidge, DHEC's Arthritis Program coordi- nator: "Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions take many forms includfng osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and lupus." Prestidge said warn- ing signs and symptoms of arthritis include pain, stiffness, joint swelling, and difficulty moving a joint. "The pain and dis- ability that accompany arthritis can be reduced through early diagnosis and appropriate manage- ment," she said. "That includes self-management activities such as weight control and physical activ- ity." Prestidge said Governor Mark Sanford has proclaimed May as Arthritis Awareness Month. As part of the observance, DHEC is launching a campaign in Richland and Lexington counties, to stress the importance of physical activity and encourage people to be more active. "Swimming, walking, or riding a bicycle are moderate, low-impact activities that can reduce pain and improve the quality of life for people with arthritis," she said. "DHEC's Arthritis Prevention and Control Program, in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation, will be telling people about the impor- tance of prevention, screening, and appropri- ate management of arthri- tis. We hope to increase participation in the Arthritis Foundation self- management programs." Prestidge said the Arthritis Self-Help course is designed to help people with arthritis develop the confidence and skills to manage their condition. DHEC's Appalachia I, Appalachia III, Edisto Savannah, Palmetto, Pee Dee, and Waccamaw Public Health Districts will of Ir the course along with the Arthritis Foundation of Hilton Head. Other Arthritis Foundation self-manage- ment programs include PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) and the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program. PACE is a land- based exercise program that uses gentle exercises to maintain strength while increasing joint flex- ibility and range of motion. PACE classes are available in Columbia, Hilton Head, Orangeburg and Rock Hill. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is a water-exercise program that reduces joint stiffness and improves flexibility. It is available in many areas of the state.
